4 Poolside Entertainment Must Haves!

Few swimming pools are stand-alone hubs of entertainment like they were in the past. Pools provide a focus around which to gather, but the area surrounding the pool is no longer considered a separate entity – it’s an extension of the home environment itself and in many instances serves as an additional room. The following are just some of the popular entertainment options for poolside entertainment.

Outdoor Kitchens

Whether it’s a simple way to grill in the backyard or an elaborate outdoor kitchen, food always has a place at gatherings with family and friends. Individuals have a multitude of cooking options from which to choose that can be installed around the pool. There are low-cost grills and BBQs to high-end kitchens that incorporate features ranging from stoves and refrigerators to pizza ovens.

TV

Waterproof TVs enable anyone to establish an outdoor home theater around the pool. With the variety of digital services available, it’s easy to stream movies or host a binge-watch party. An added benefit is that with an outdoor TV, individuals can watch any number of games and sports programs from the comfort of the pool.

Game Center

Many companies have stepped up to meet the challenge of outdoor gaming options with amusements such as waterproof pool tables. With waterproof TVs and outdoor storage units, an afternoon of video games or even a weekend-long event isn’t beyond reach.

Music

The addition of music is perhaps one of the easiest ways to increase the entertainment value around the pool area. Systems can be added to an existing pool, though it’s less expensive to do so at the time the pool is installed.

For existing pools, the most popular, convenient, and cost-effective way to add music is waterproof sound systems that are controlled from mobile devices. Individuals can stream and create playlists the same as they would for indoor listening via decorative and strategically placed speakers.

Why is my Pool Turning Green?

The water in your pool can change colors for multiple reasons. When it turns green the most common culprit is algae. There are other causes of green pool water that you may not have even considered, but will succeed in ruining your pool experience.

Algae

If the appropriate amount of chlorine isn’t maintained within the pool water, algae will begin to grow and the entire volume of water can transform into a green quagmire within a day. A swimming pool with an algae bloom isn’t safe to swim in and can make you ill. An additional concern is if chlorine levels aren’t maintained at the correct levels, the algae-laden water can provide an excellent breeding ground for disease-carrying insects such as mosquitoes.

Filter Problems

Algae can also form if the power and size of your pool pump and filter are too small for the amount of water it’s cleaning. Clearing the pool of algae can take varying amounts of time, depending upon the type of filter that’s in use. It can take a week with a sand-based filter to completely clear the algae from the pool. If you have a cartridge filter, you may need to clean the cartridge every day until the pool water returns to normal.

Metals

Copper is another common cause of green pool water and can originate from a variety of sources that include cheap algaecides, from water sources, and even copper heating elements of pool heaters. It’s a problem that will get continually worse if left untreated.

The greening of pool water in this situation typically happens when a pool is shocked. If present in sufficient amounts, the metal(s) will oxidize, resulting in green pool water. Blond hair will also turn green when excessive levels of metals are present.

Pollen

Pool water can also turn green or a greenish-yellow from pollen falls. The good thing about the situation is that pollen isn’t harmful or dangerous – unless you have severe allergies. Even if you don’t have plants close by the pool, pollen is easily blown about by breezes and can drift into your pool.

Summer Pool Maintenance is Essential!

Pool maintenance is a must in the summer and the watery oasis may need more frequent attention depending on its usage and weather conditions. In very hot weather, a pool’s chemical balance can change quickly and it will be affected by a number of variables.

Increased Usage

For those that have large families or entertain frequently, summer pool maintenance is especially important. Each time someone gets in the pool, they bring along with the dead skin cells, sunscreen, and a myriad of normally occurring bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The levels of all those elements increase as more people use the pool or people use it more often.

More Debris

Trees, bushes, flowers and grass shed leaves and pollen throughout the summer that will find its way into the pool. It’s important to skim any large debris from the pool to help the filter work more efficiently and ensure it doesn’t get blocked. A weekly check is critical. The task may need to be performed even more often if there are a lot of plantings very near the pool. It can help to remember that the pool’s filter works much like the kidneys in the human body to filter waste.

More Algae

No one wants to swim in an algae laden pool and it’s more than just an aesthetic concern – it’s also a health issue. There are a number of factors that will have a bearing on algae growth including warm temperatures, pH balance, and sunlight, all of which cause algae to flourish. Poor water circulation and incorrect pool sanitation measures also have the ability to contribute to algae growth.

More Chemicals

Inexperienced pool owners often try to compensate for problems by adding more chlorine. That chemical and others have specific uses within the pool environment and should only be used for the issues for which they were intended. Too many chemicals or in the incorrect amount will cause an imbalance in pH levels, causing swimmers’ eyes to burn, irritation of the nose and throat, and even a burning rash.

Hosting a Safe Pool Party for Kids

Every parent knows how quickly children of any age can get into mischief. Youngsters are curious and have no comprehension of the dangers a pool can present. For anyone planning on hosting a pool party for kids, there are a few basic tips that should be followed to ensure everyone has a happy time but remember that safety should always be the top priority.

No Unaccompanied Children

This should be clearly stated when you issue the invitations. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. It may seem harsh, but make it clear that unaccompanied children will not be allowed to attend.

Have a Lifeguard

If there’s someone that can be trusted to act as a lifeguard, ask them to do so. If no one is available or willing to take on the responsibility, hire one from a reputable company.

Establish Health and Safety Rules

Set safety rules and make sure that each parent receives a copy of them when the invitation is issued. It will help reduce problems on the day of the event and be sure to post them on the premises where they’re easily seen. Some basics include no diving or running in the pool area, and no food or drinks are allowed in or near the pool. All children that aren’t potty trained must wear a swim diaper.

Stock up on Essential Supplies

It’s inevitable that children will arrive without floaties or sunscreen. Floaties are essential for any child that has limited swimming experience or skill. Sunscreen is equally important. Children are at increased risk of sunburn in the late morning and early afternoon, and the potential increases due to the sun’s rays being reflected from the water in the pool.

Take Regular Breaks

Even though children are surrounded by water, they can easily become dehydrated. Make sure everyone takes regular breaks and they have plenty to drink. Get everyone out of the pool periodically and offer them juice and tempting frozen treats.

Prepare for Potential Emergencies

Despite the best laid plans and precautions, the potential still exists for an emergency. Hosts should be trained in CPR, have a fully stocked first aid kit ready, and keep a phone close to hand. It’s also a good idea to check and make sure the event is covered by the homeowner’s policy.

Prepare the Pool

A pool party is no fun if there’s algae growth or the pH levels are off. To ensure that the water is perfect for swimming on the day of the big event, consult with a pool specialist. Explain what’s needed and when the celebration will take place. A pool professional can ensure that the water is sparkling clean, safe, and inviting for the party.

Poolside Entertainment – Throwing a Poolside Party!

A swimming pool is enjoyable by itself and it becomes a magnet for good times when poolside entertainment is added. From stereo systems and TVs to games and waterslides, individuals have a wealth of options available to enhance any gathering.

Music

There are so many ways to deliver music to a pool it will be difficult to choose. Consider the installation of a free-standing poolside stereo system. They’re stylish, Bluetooth enabled, and can be operated via a mobile device. Stereo systems can also be built into the pool design with speakers strategically disguised as ordinary items such as rocks.

You can even pipe in your favorite playlist. To create ambiance for any type of poolside activity, you might want to think about placing a floating speaker in the pool. Outdoor audio systems are a welcome addition whether you’re throwing a theme party or entertaining at an impromptu gathering.

Television

A big-screen TV brings the action and adventure of sporting events up close and personal. A TV at the poolside is also great for movie nights and watch parties. It’s great for catching up on your favorite programs while working out or after getting the kids off to school.

Waterslides

For the feel of a waterpark, inflatable water slides can be rented for a day of entertainment. Models are available to appeal to every age group. The slides can be set up to deposit sliders directly into an existing pool.

Basketball Hoops

Basketball isn’t just for the hardcourt. Floating goals can be purchased or rented that can be placed directly in the pool for one-on-one action or form teams for competitions.

Fun Food Machines

Food is essential at any pool party and there are a wide variety of machines that can be rented or purchased outright to provide fun snacks and cool treats. Individuals can choose from machines to provide snow cones, cotton candy and theater-style popcorn, along with hotdog steamers. They’re great for munching while watching sporting events and keeping children occupied.

No Limits

There’s no limit to the activities in which family and friends can engage in with the appropriate entertainment options. The pool is a great gathering place for watching TV, listening to music, playing games, or just spending quiet time with loved ones.
